Brookland, F. J.
Frederick John Brookland, 345698, was a Private in the Black Watch (Royal Highlanders). He was born on 13 August 1885 at 38 Motley Street, East Battersea, London, to John Brookland, a coal porter, and his wife Emily, née Hogwood. They had three children, Frederick (Jack) Sidney and Gwendoline Winifred, and Elsie M, born the year her father was killed. One little boy Leonard, died in infancy.

Private Brookland was killed in action on 27 December 1917 at Ibizia Latron, Palestine. 345698 in an attempt to take the Zeitun Ridge and the main objective, the Hill of Shafia at the extreme end of the ridge. Fighting at night and able to see another battalion working up the ridge on a smaller hill to their to their right, they suddenly encountered the enemy. Two officers and seven other ranks were killed, and 22 other ranks wounded, three of whom subsequently died from wounds.

Private Brookland was buried in the Ibizia District Military Graveyard, and his body was later transferred, probably on 9 November 1920, to the Jerusalem Military cemetery, D37.
