Note: Charles Richard Daniel Palmer was born on 29 July 980 at
Swingfield. He was a Chief Stoker in the RN, and lost his life
on 27 April 1916, when HMS Russell struck two mines laid by U73
in the Mediterranean. The ship caught fire and sank, but
sufficiently slowly and close to Malta that a flotilla of small
boats was able to rescue 625 survivors. Around 130 of the crew
were lost. Charles is buried at Malta Capuccini Naval Cemetery,
Prot grave 311. Charles was a cousin of
Walter Tull, son of Walter's uncle Richard Graves Palmer and
his wife Sarah. with thanks to
