Note: Charles Richard Daniel Palmer was born on 29 July 980 at Swingfield. He was a Chief Stoker in the RN, and lost his life on 27 April 1916, when HMS Russell struck two mines laid by U73 in the Mediterranean. The ship caught fire and sank, but sufficiently slowly and close to Malta that a flotilla of small boats was able to rescue 625 survivors. Around 130 of the crew were lost. Charles is buried at Malta Capuccini Naval Cemetery, Prot grave 311. Charles was a cousin of Walter Tull, son of Walter's uncle Richard Graves Palmer and his wife Sarah.
